Event: Majura Festival – This weekend

By lukeo at 6:56 pm on Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Details are a bit sketchy on this one, but the Majura Festival kicks into gear this Friday 21st September 2007 in Woolley Street Dickson.  For all you drivers out there, you better find alternate routes because the road is closed from 3pm Friday to 8pm Saturday Night.

Drumassult will be playing Friday night at 10pm after battle of the bands.

I hope to get a few more details before Friday, otherwise see you there at 10pm.

Upcoming: Floriade

By kaydo at 11:00 pm on Tuesday, September 4, 2007

There’s probably many things we could get excited about which are a tad better than a flower show.  But really, its spring in Canberra and so people go a little crazy with the sudden lack of cold.  Along with an apparently Australiana-themed Floriade brings some outstanding events for September and October.  A few highlights:

  • Frickin GNOMES.  I’ve already established that I think this idea is grand.  We entered Run DMC gnomes for the ‘Rock n Roll’ theme a few years ago.  This year is Australiana.  I predict 1000s of either Boonie or Steve Irwin.  I will enter when I can think up something a little more inspired.*
  • Sand Sculptures.  I gather these are just a part of the overall exhibition, but I still think it’s great.  I gather it’s Canberra/National Icons made out of sand.  Inspired.
  • Learn Bonsai.  For a generation of children, they watched Karate Kid and wanted to learn the moves.  I watched it and wanted to learn bonsai.  Unfortunately I’ve killed every one of my previous attempts, and it’s still my favourite movie.  I might reconsider my Bonsai career between the 15th and 16th of September.
  • RMC Band Beat Retreat performance.  I stumbled upon this a few years back by following noise and fireworks (yes, just follow me if disaster strikes).  Perhaps this year I’ll actually attend.
  • Breakfast with the Birds @ the Botanic Gardens.  Saturdays and Sundays from 22 September – 14 October.
  • AIS Sportex Exhibition.  I’ve wanted to go to this for ages, but they’re donating part of the proceeds to charity during Floriade, PLUS they have some free sport demo days.  Sounds good.

Oh and these guys, are appearing regularly.
Kangaroo men at the running of the sheep in Boorowa

PANTS last crossed paths with them during the Running of the Sheep a few years ago.  If you do nothing else, definately check out the crazy Kangaroo men.  They’re actually called Roo’d from Icarus and are apparently appearing on 15-16 September, 29 September – 7 October.  Gold.

* can you already guess next week’s PANTaSk?

Review: City2Surf 2007

By kaydo at 12:28 am on Tuesday, August 14, 2007

So thanks to LukeO, you’re probably aware that I decided to dabble in a bit of competitive running over the weekend. Being otherwise unprepared for the event (i.e. I’ve never run anywhere before ever for any purpose) I thought that a completely sedentary build-up would be best. The way I justified this, is that I’d be ready to expend this otherwise unused energy on race day. This is one of many reasons I am not a scientist.

Here’s a photo of the people I was beating shortly after the start of the race:
2007-08-12-city2surf-04

I was passed by most of these people shortly before the first km marker.

Due to city2surf onset laziness, I want to summarise in dot points. Antics I appreciated:

  • The 35 minutes it took me to cross the start line (kind of takes the urgency out of things)
  • Metallica cover band on the roof of a pub in double bay, complete with awesome wigs
  • The dude racing in a mexican wrestling mask. Sweaty.
  • Free gatorade given away by people with entirely ORANGE HANDS (I took this as a warning of things to come)
  • The people dressed up as ANZ ATMs on heartbreak hill. I hope they were paid well
  • Ice cream trucks along the route, brilliant.
  • Spectators with beer EVERYWHERE, especially in pretty precarious locations (the spectators that is)
  • The folks around the 9km mark who had a home-made sign reading “1km to go”. I think this is genius.
  • 60,000+ doses of zany, example: 2007-08-12-city2surf-05
  • As promised in previous posts, it’s time for more stats:

14km – Distance travelled … city2surf (though whereis tells me an alternative route means 6km/2hrs by foot)
7.0km/hr – Speed I was going on flat bits when I remembered to check
4.6km/hr – Speed up hearbreak hill
28km/hr – Max Speed achieved during the event
100% – Chance that my GPS was malfunctioning at that point
2.2km/hr Speed I walked after the event
7.8km/hr Speed I walked to purchase a redbull & iceblock post event

    2007-08-12-city2surf-06

[Update] Starting back of the pack means I should apparently take 20mins, 28 seconds off my finishing time. It took me an extra 20 minutes after that to cross the start line! Regardless, my official finishing position is 44,501st.

Proposed: 18-wheels-o-fun*

By kaydo at 9:07 pm on Wednesday, July 11, 2007

The Rotary Club of Canberra are organising a scenic cycle tour of Canberra. If you’re hyper-competitive or fit, you can do one of the hardcore courses, or if you’re lame you can do the one rated ‘easy’. After the Canberra Day bike ride was seriously rained on earlier in the year, this might be a way to get the same fix. Sounds like fun.

Hit us up in the comments if you want to join in, or we’ll see you there.

* I’ll need 8 other people to realise my 18-wheel dream. There’s actually nothing truck related as I may have implied.

Proposed: Runs o fun

By kaydo at 8:25 pm on Monday, July 9, 2007

I’m not suggesting actually running, but some enlightened fun run officials have decided to allow other forms of competitive transport in upcoming events. Seems fun. Check it:

Scooters, Rollerblades, Bikes are all welcome.

Announcing: The PANTaSk

By kaydo at 12:06 pm on Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Inspired by a thoughtful post on Ask MeFi, and of course everything ever done on 43 things, I propose a weekly PANTS task, or PANTaSk. Every Sunday night will be a new thing to try or challenge for the week (not necessarily a group activity like our other posts).

Leave your suggestions in the comments. Will continue until we get bored of it or run short on ideas.

Trikke day afternoon

By kaydo at 7:35 pm on Sunday, July 1, 2007

Trikkes_0900

The review has been a long time coming, but it’s still hopefully worth sharing. After a short but intense obsession in pursuit of a trikke, we were able to realise the dream a few weeks ago in the heart of the sunny CBR.

For those of you unfamiliar with trikkes, they’re a type of scooter. There’s three large rollerblade style wheels and you rock back and forth to generate motion. Once you get moving, the action is very much like rollerblading or skiing and they are rather awesome. So awesome in fact, that we did it two days in a row. It’s not a particularly taxing activity, hence our non-exercise garb in the pics.

The folks at real fun adventures hire out various size trikkes (amongst other equipment) down by the lake at commonwealth place every weekend. In the hour we borrowed them, we managed to get from there, to the yacht club and back with time aplenty to spare. The only hazards we struck were a few heckling fishermen and generally being a bit of a freakshow. Definately something to do with plenty of others around.

We’re set for another Trikke day in the future. Keep a watch out here for more details or, as always, let us know if you’re interested.

i’ve got nothing witty to say about… golf

By kaydo at 11:51 pm on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Ridiculously cold winter nights are the best time for outdoor activities. We’re bringing back the tradition of the golf driving range. It’s on:

What: Hitting golf balls
Where: Narrabundah Golf Driving Range
When: 7pm Wednesday 13/06
Why: Canberra doesn’t have a baseball batting cage. I’ve checked. Also, there’s heaters.

In the case of PANTS, tradition = when we think of it. When should we do this again?

winterlude in canberra

By kaydo at 8:50 pm on Monday, June 4, 2007

It’s been a bit quiet around these parts of late. I’ve been absent from the twosixonefive – what’s your excuse?

Anyway, with June we welcome a stupid number of winter-themed posts and activities. You have been warned.

Upcoming coolness* is primarily around three activities:

  • Friday 8th June – RailJam outside Adrenalin Sports in Braddon. The JoinPANTS crew attended last year and it rocked. There’s a crazy ramp, lots of ice, lots of skills and stunts on display, lots of injury and, if last year is anything to go by, antics in underwear. We’ll rock up for the event and head to Civic Pub after the event.
  • Saturday 9th June – Opening of the ski season. Normally this can go by unnoticed, but this year there is SNOW. Season 2006 proves we cannot take this for granted, so a quick dash might be required over the long weekend.
  • Constantly – Ice Hockey – the Canberra Knights are still going strong. It’s a great winter activity, particularly when the outdoor temperature is a bit closer to that inside, less shock.
  • July (yes, the whole month) – Winter in the capital. The ACT govt loves you after all! They’re planning on re-using the vast expanse of bitumen left by the Cirque de Soliel crew for something other than futsal and will see my personal dream realised. It’ll be crazy cold, but we’ll get the chance to embrace it with Ice Skating, Snow ball wars and night markets. Stay tuned for the highlights.

* and puns aplenty

Also, its fireworks weekend. Have you got yours?
