i’ve got nothing witty to say about… golf

By kaydo at 11:51 pm on Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Ridiculously cold winter nights are the best time for outdoor activities. We’re bringing back the tradition of the golf driving range. It’s on:

What: Hitting golf balls
Where: Narrabundah Golf Driving Range
When: 7pm Wednesday 13/06
Why: Canberra doesn’t have a baseball batting cage. I’ve checked. Also, there’s heaters.

In the case of PANTS, tradition = when we think of it. When should we do this again?

winterlude in canberra

By kaydo at 8:50 pm on Monday, June 4, 2007

It’s been a bit quiet around these parts of late. I’ve been absent from the twosixonefive – what’s your excuse?

Anyway, with June we welcome a stupid number of winter-themed posts and activities. You have been warned.

Upcoming coolness* is primarily around three activities:

  • Friday 8th June – RailJam outside Adrenalin Sports in Braddon. The JoinPANTS crew attended last year and it rocked. There’s a crazy ramp, lots of ice, lots of skills and stunts on display, lots of injury and, if last year is anything to go by, antics in underwear. We’ll rock up for the event and head to Civic Pub after the event.
  • Saturday 9th June – Opening of the ski season. Normally this can go by unnoticed, but this year there is SNOW. Season 2006 proves we cannot take this for granted, so a quick dash might be required over the long weekend.
  • Constantly – Ice Hockey – the Canberra Knights are still going strong. It’s a great winter activity, particularly when the outdoor temperature is a bit closer to that inside, less shock.
  • July (yes, the whole month) – Winter in the capital. The ACT govt loves you after all! They’re planning on re-using the vast expanse of bitumen left by the Cirque de Soliel crew for something other than futsal and will see my personal dream realised. It’ll be crazy cold, but we’ll get the chance to embrace it with Ice Skating, Snow ball wars and night markets. Stay tuned for the highlights.

* and puns aplenty

Also, its fireworks weekend. Have you got yours?

The folks at ACT Handball (the olympic kind, not the playground kind) are setting up some “Come & Try Sessions” in the next few days. If you’re interested in checking out the sport, or maybe pegging a smallish ball towards a goal (as opposed to at someone a la dodgeball) then check it out…

May 22nd and May 29th
Venue: Woden Basketball Stadium
Time: 1930 – 2100
Cost: $6

Want to learn to Curl?

By kaydo at 9:59 pm on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Last May some PANTSters took a trip to Bendigo for 9 hours of non-stop hilarity that was curling. Now is your chance to join the fun, rather than hijacking a competitive tournament like we did. It’s more than just running in slipperly sneakers along an ice rink, there’s sweeping, yelling and lots of friendly sledging. Gold.

From the Victorian Curling Association (which PANTS hold a membership):

The Victorian Curling Association has secured the services of Sharon Delver who is the Regional Coach of the Okanagan Training Centre in British Columbia, Canada. Sharon offers consultations for teams and coaches and at high performance camps, as well as providing services to clubs.

There are coaching clinics to be held in Bendigo on the Tuesday (22nd), Wednesday (23rd) and Thursday (24th) of May at the Bendigo ice rink.

If you are interested in attending please contact us for the paperwork or contact Janet Cobden on 5441 1519 or janet@farmdesign.com.au

Yay for crazy winter sports and many many canadians.

Looking for Easter fun?

By kaydo at 2:09 pm on Thursday, April 5, 2007

For those of you stuck in town who decide that the National Folk Festival isn’t your kind of scene, you should check out Adventure Paintball. Over the long weekend they have a mega cheap $10 to get all day play with paintballs $15/100. Cost effective way to settle a score, invite someone you hate.

Proposed: Volunteer for getting muddy

By kaydo at 12:41 pm on Sunday, April 1, 2007

I propose we volunteer to help out at this year’s Rally of Canberra in early June. The volunteer form is online. It should be a kick ass way to see the race up close.

Big Canberra Bike Ride

By kaydo at 12:01 am on Monday, March 19, 2007

March 19th is the Canberra day public holiday AND the Big Canberra Bike Ride.  It’s a damn fine event, as those who participated with me last year can verify.  If you’re lame it’s VERY VERY like the tour de france, and if you can keep up with the main pack (i.e people on those silly recumbent bikes and children) you pretty much get the run of the road.  It’s like fame, without the need to be good at something.  Don’t do the longer circuit unless you’re capable of riding up hills.

More info from the Pedal Power website.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk

By kaydo at 12:01 am on Sunday, March 18, 2007

It’s on the Sunday of the Canberra day long weekend, so there’s little reason not to attend.  This is a one-time deal, you get to book a place and then walk across the bridge in your allotted window.  They seem to take the whole booking/registration thing quite seriously.  You have 30 minutes to walk just over 3kms, so most folk should be able to manage it.

For those that want to be smart, the point is that you walk on the road (which you’re not normally allowed to walk on) as opposed to the path (which of course, you are).  Embrace the fun.

More info on the Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk website.

Amazing CANBERRA Race

By kaydo at 12:01 am on Wednesday, February 7, 2007

We clearly don’t have sole rights on good ideas.  Here’s another.  Introducing the Amazing Canberra RaceWhile we can’t claim any responsibility for it, we’ll be there front and centre.

It’s like the ever addictive Amazing Race tv show, with less diverse scenery, more car-based travel, and waaaaaaaaay more alcohol.  It’s wholesome family fun.

The idea is to complete the task / solve the puzzle / whatever, to get the clue to the next watering hole.  You will need to team up and there’s driving involved, so a team is expected to consist of

  • 1 car
  • 3+ people
  • Sober driver

For extra information and to register your team goto http://www.AmazingCanberraRace.com

An early prediction is that this will be the greatest idea of Summer 07.  Lock it in.
