Event: Majura Festival – This weekend

By lukeo at 6:56 pm on Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Details are a bit sketchy on this one, but the Majura Festival kicks into gear this Friday 21st September 2007 in Woolley Street Dickson.  For all you drivers out there, you better find alternate routes because the road is closed from 3pm Friday to 8pm Saturday Night.

Drumassult will be playing Friday night at 10pm after battle of the bands.

I hope to get a few more details before Friday, otherwise see you there at 10pm.

Review: Wander with thousands

By kaydo at 9:27 pm on Sunday, September 16, 2007

FunRun-Floriade-2If you’re interested in such things, you may recall last week’s PANTaSk invited you to wander with thousands, and based on the turnout on the day, for once I didnt exaggerate.  Give it time.

The event began with a lazy wander down a closed Adelaide avenue towards Parliament house:

FunRun-Floriade-1You can almost see the competition amongst the competitors as they wandered and jostled for position.

FunRun-Floriade-4No, I don’t have a lot to say of any substance. It was a fun 5km walk on a kick-ass Canberra day. The roads were closed, and we had the run of the place. The walk was flat and not challenging, but it was a great new perspective of the city. That being said, our time sucked:

FunRun-Floriade-7Maybe I’ll run next year.  Was a fun event, if you didn’t give it a shot, plan to join in for 2008.  Not many things get so many Canberrans in one place.

Review: Balloon Fiesta

By kaydo at 10:14 pm on Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Balloons_Canberra_ 14-04-2007 8-57-06 PM

Some of the PANTS crew put in an appearance at the Night Time part of the Canberra Balloon Fiesta. The above photo is my attempt to demonstrate my serious need for a tripod and the pretty pretty lights. I’ll let you be the judge.

Anyway, it was completely the place to be if you had a child in a stroller. It never occurred to me that this would be a wholesome family event. So be it. Wading through thousands of tiny children with blue light sabres we found ourselves a spot directly across from what turned out to be a sherrin football. Yes! A football full of air! (actually rather cool).

The whole shindig began, for us at least, with some skydivers landing in the middle of Manuka Oval. Then they began to fill the balloons on the oval which were somewhat dramatically tethered. Cue the music and the lighting of balloons in time. Classy stuff.

Verdict was that it was a pretty cool spectacle, and certainly worth going to next year if you didn’t make it down there for the 2007 spectacular. Its far easier to rock up at night than pre-dawn. I might go back to the parliament house lawns next year, I’ve got about a year to work up to the ridiculously early call time.

Reminder: National High-Five Day

By lukeo at 1:24 pm on Monday, April 16, 2007

Just a quick reminder to all that Thursday is National High Five Day.
So get out there and throw someone a big West Indian High Five. But please be careful, a misguided high-five can cause injury.

Event: Canberra Balloon Fiesta

By lukeo at 6:00 am on Friday, April 13, 2007

13 – 16 April 2007

If you are the sort of person to get up amazingly early for no good reason at all, if you’re the sort of person willing to freeze your extremities off for adventure and if you don’t mind lining up with 20 other people for expensive bad coffee then this is the event for you!!!

In all seriousness, this is an amazing thing to watch if you can be arsed getting up.  I have been a few years and well worth it.  Over 50 balloon launch from Old Parliament House and float about for an hour or so before landing on roads and ovals all over Canberra.  Take your camera.  For more info visit www.canberraballoonfiesta.com.au

[ED: This event was marked as March for some reason.  It’s AprilAprilApril.  Thanks SGS for spotting the error.]

Public Holiday(s): EASTER!

By kaydo at 12:01 am on Friday, April 6, 2007

It never ends (well it does, but it’s rather a long and fancy weekend).  As I don’t trust wordpress quite enough for this, let’s just say you don’t have to go to work on April 6th (Good Friday), April 7th (Easter Saturday), April 9th (Easter Monday).

Almost makes you wish you were in Tasmania as they also get the Tuesday off.  Bastards.
