CBR snow

By kaydo at 4:39 pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Word on the riotact and elsewhere is that it will snow in canberra tonight and tomorrow below 500m. As Canberra is at 564m above sea level, we should all expect to be 64m under snow tomorrow*. PANTS plan is to get outdoors early (i.e. pre-work) with a snow scooter:

Leave a message in the comments if you want to join us. If it doesn’t snow, we will probably sleep.

* No scientific basis for this statement whatsoever, but it will snow.

PANTaSk – Week 2 (15 Jul) – Blow stuff up

By kaydo at 10:46 pm on Sunday, July 15, 2007

Welcome to PANTaSk week 2! How did you go with the postcards?

Week 2: Blow stuff up

  • Make a balloon animal
  • Check out WikiHow for a full tutorial, including photos
  • If you get better during the week, you might even try some more daring structures, my personal favourite is the Tommy Gun.

Required task completion date: 22 July

If you participate it would be lovely if you took a photo, if you do, please send it to us. If your creation isn’t all you’d hoped, let us know in the comments.

[UPDATE] – Less than 12 hours into the actual task and LukeO has already made a tommy gun. That leaves a few days left for him to step it up a notch. Extra points for wearing the PANTS jumper during the creation. – kaydo

Review: Ice-capades in the CBR

By kaydo at 9:49 pm on Sunday, July 15, 2007

Some of the PANTS crew took a quick trip down to Winter Wonderland over the weekend. The idea of a giant tent of wintery goodness promised much, however it was a little lame. That being said, I still loved every second of it (lucky, because it cost $18).

Here’s the lowdown. The giant tent contains mostly an empty void. Other features: food (a la the show), rides (also show like), crazy lighting, a stage with no apparent purpose, an inflated snowman which is easily as tall as the tent itself, and computer games. Odd.

The cool bits?

A snowball shooting zone:

A tiny skating rink:

Pink skates!

It’s clearly targeted at children a little younger than me, and some of the execution is lacking, but its still pretty fantastic that Canberra has something like this to celebrate an otherwise cold and lifeless winter. It’s $18 and only about two hours committment, but it’s really great juvenile fun. I hope this becomes an annual feature, but for that to happen it no doubt needs some support. Get there.

Proposed: 18-wheels-o-fun*

By kaydo at 9:07 pm on Wednesday, July 11, 2007

The Rotary Club of Canberra are organising a scenic cycle tour of Canberra. If you’re hyper-competitive or fit, you can do one of the hardcore courses, or if you’re lame you can do the one rated ‘easy’. After the Canberra Day bike ride was seriously rained on earlier in the year, this might be a way to get the same fix. Sounds like fun.

Hit us up in the comments if you want to join in, or we’ll see you there.

* I’ll need 8 other people to realise my 18-wheel dream. There’s actually nothing truck related as I may have implied.

Proposed: Runs o fun

By kaydo at 8:25 pm on Monday, July 9, 2007

I’m not suggesting actually running, but some enlightened fun run officials have decided to allow other forms of competitive transport in upcoming events. Seems fun. Check it:

Scooters, Rollerblades, Bikes are all welcome.

PANTaSk – Week 1 (8 Jul) – Post stuff

By kaydo at 9:49 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2007

Those of you who have re-call that extends beyond 12 hours, may remember the announcement of a weekly PANTaSk. The criteria is something unusual or fun which can be accomplished in a week. Generally not a zany group activity like our other stuff.

Week 1: Post stuff

  • Buy 5 zany or comically bad postcards (I think it should be a site-wide agreement that we’ll never buy those “[insert town name] by night” postcards that are just completely black)
  • Pop over to postcrossing.com
  • Register to get a login on their site
  • Get yourself 5 addresses and postcard IDs
  • Mail the postcards, make them brilliant and witty like the folks you are
  • Receive your postcards from random postcrossers around the world. Make new friends
  • Tell us about the brilliant time you had on your PANTaSk
  • Profit*

Participation requirements: Very few, even non-Canberra PANTSters can join in this one.

Required task completion date: 15 July

We’re always taking suggestions for future weeks, hit us up in the comments. If you participate it would be lovely if you took a photo, if you do, please send it to us. We love mail too.

* There’s no actual profit, nor chance of profit. This is really only likely to cost you a few bucks though.

Green Faces is back at the Irish Club. If you don’t have geliophobia (i.e. a fear of laughter), then this should be the place for you.

  • Tahir (05 Jul 07)
  • Greg Fleet (12 Jul 07)
  • Steady Eddy (19 Jul 07)
  • Wil Anderson (26 Jul 07)
  • Mick Meredith (02 Aug 07)

Announcing: The PANTaSk

By kaydo at 12:06 pm on Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Inspired by a thoughtful post on Ask MeFi, and of course everything ever done on 43 things, I propose a weekly PANTS task, or PANTaSk. Every Sunday night will be a new thing to try or challenge for the week (not necessarily a group activity like our other posts).

Leave your suggestions in the comments. Will continue until we get bored of it or run short on ideas.

Canberra Glassworks

By kaydo at 7:46 pm on Tuesday, July 3, 2007

This time, PANTS is the last to jump on the bandwagon. You may have seen the ads on tv for the Canberra Glassworks, and naturally we want to get involved. If you want to just check the place out, it’s just near the Old Bus Depot Markets and is open 9am-5pm Wed-Sat, 10-4pm Sunday. Check out the Canberra Glassworks website for more details.

If you prefer to take a whim a tad too far, as we usually do, then you might be interested in the classes. You can become Mr Glass:

Mr Glass

Yes, I realise that wasn’t the source of the nickname, but it fits my story better than brittle bones.

So, there’s a few different options to help you emerge yourself in all things glassy. Assuming you can’t attend the weekday workshops, the options we have are to attend an action packed course over a few weeknights or do a half day workshop on a weekend. I vote night. Upcoming fun:

July 11, 18, 25, Aug 1

Intro classes:

  • Glass blowing ($450)
  • Kiln forming ($395)
  • Glass casting ($395)
  • August 8,15,22,29

  • Bead making, an introduction ($420)
  • This isn’t obviously a full list of all courses available, it’s really the ones that interest me. Check out the site for other options.
